The history of Algeco

History of Algeco

On 19 December 1955, Algeco was founded by Jean-Pierre Bruggeman and Jean Thomachot in the French city of Mâcon. Initially Algeco's (d'Alliance et Gestion Commerciale) business operations primarily involved the sale of (raw) materials such as flour, sugar, cement, coal, wine, and vehicles. The development of prefab construction, however, only really started at the end of 1955. Generations later, we are still a leader in this market.

 

First major success with the Bulle 2002

The very first prefab construction we released onto the market was a wooden shed with a stove and a sleeping area. At the end of the 50s, we introduced the "Bulle 2002": a plastic 9m² unit that could be connected to other units. This practical, original, quick, and affordable solution was met with enthusiastic response. Soon, the units were appearing everywhere and we developed bigger and better models based on the "Bulle 2002". Algeco spread across Europe.

Starting from the mid-90s, we started developing services for specific markets. That is how Algeco became more and more important for the construction sector, for schools and hospitals, and the growing market for temporary office accommodation. The concept of continuous improvement was applied to every unit - always adjusting and improving based on previous models. We came up with better solutions, modules were re-invented, and the design evolved. And that is how we eventually arrived at the units we know today.

Acquisition of BUKO by Algeco

In 2019, Algeco took a big step forward with the acquisition of BUKO Housing. This was not simply a company takeover, but rather a powerful merger that turned the modular housing world upside down.

With Algeco as the proud market leader in construction and BUKO's strong position on the Dutch market, this merger promised to be a winning combination. This acquisition offered Algeco a unique opportunity to reinforce its leadership in modular construction and solutions for modular spaces and services on both the rental and sales markets, thereby further increasing its market share and its customer base.

The acquisition of BUKO Huisvesting by Algeco was not only a strategic move, but also an opportunity for growth and synergy. Customers could now benefit from a wider range of solutions and an even better service, while both companies worked together to take innovation and quality to new heights.

As of January 2021, BUKO Housing continued permanently under the name Algeco B.V. and from then on had two locations for operations: Beverwijk and Moerdijk.

Algeco has always held onto the initial concept: modular solutions that meet the client's needs. The past decades, we always sought out new applications and markets to introduce our products. In a continuously changing world, Algeco kept innovating, with the final result being our position as market leaders in prefab construction. Not only within Europe, but outside as well.
