Algeco Bouw & Winkels is pleased to highlight the project Grand Café Living, a modern and versatile café pavilion centrally located at Utrecht Science Park.

Commissioned by Utrecht University, this project was awarded to Algeco through a private tender and involved the design and construction of a welcoming café space that embodies both functionality and aesthetic sophistication. The pavilion serves as a vibrant dining and gathering space, with management and operations led by Brothers Horeca Groep, who provide a warm atmosphere for students, faculty, and visitors. Grand Living is designed to be a comfortable and flexible hub for the university community, fulfilling Algeco’s commitment to excellence in temporary building solutions.

Project objectives and community impact

The Grand Living project was developed to function as a high-quality, temporary café solution while the primary restaurant facility at Utrecht Science Park undergoes renovation over the next five years. Key objectives for Algeco included ensuring sustainability, flexibility, and comfort in a space that could be relocated if required. Grand Living combines a luxurious design with a practical and eco-friendly approach, creating a highly functional pavilion that aligns with Algeco’s values and the vision of Utrecht University.

Positioned centrally on the university campus, Grand Living serves as a social and dining hub for the Utrecht Science Park community. By providing a warm and inviting “living room” feel, the café encourages connections among students, faculty, and visitors alike.

Building and design process: focus on sustainability

The construction of Grand Living was completed in approximately two months, including the installation of all systems and final touches to provide a seamless user experience. Algeco was responsible for the architectural drawings, which were created in close alignment with the client’s specifications. The interior layout and furnishings were developed by the client in collaboration with an interior designer, ensuring a design that reflected their vision for functionality and atmosphere.

The Grand Living pavilion was crafted to meet modern standards of sustainability, energy efficiency, and design sophistication. Key features include:

  • Sustainable Building Materials: The pavilion is clad in maintenance-free cedar wood, enhancing its durability and reducing upkeep. The extensive use of glass in the facades allows natural light to permeate the space, creating a bright and welcoming interior.
  • Energy Efficiency: With an energy rating of A++ and an insulation rating (RC ≥ 2.5), Grand Living reflects Algeco’s commitment to sustainable building practices. The building’s advanced insulation and energy-saving features make it a highly efficient space.
  • Comfort and Safety Installations: Equipped with a modern air conditioning and ventilation system, the pavilion ensures a comfortable environment year-round. Additionally, comprehensive fire protection and security systems prioritize user safety.

Grand Living’s interior was carefully designed to create a luxurious yet approachable atmosphere. Key design elements include:

  • Natural and Elegant Aesthetics: Exposed timber beams and stylish modern furnishings contribute to a cozy and welcoming environment, suitable for everything from quick coffee breaks to extended meetings or study sessions.
  • Custom Furnishings: Furnishings and finishes by Brothers Horeca Groep complement the building’s architecture, creating a cohesive and inviting ambiance.
